1. Question tags make claims into questions.
Question tags are used to check if something is true.
They are answered with a “yes” or a “no”.
For example:
Person 1: He came home at 9 pm, didn’t he?
Person 2: Yes
“He came home at 9 pm,” is the claim.
“Didn’t he?” is the question tag!
The question tag makes this sentence a question.
Do not know what “didn’t” means? Click here to learn more about it!
2. If A Statement Is Positive, The Question Tag Is Negative
If A Statement Is Negative, The Question Tag Is Positive!
A negative sentence is a sentence that has the word “not”.
For example:
He didn’t submit the assignment, did he?
“He didn’t(did not) submit the assignment,” = Negative
“Did he?” = positive
Here is a second example:
She has worked very hard, hasn’t she?
“She has worked very hard,” = Positive
“Hasn’t(has not) she?” = Negative
3. If There Is An Auxiliary Verb, Use it in The Question Tag
These are auxiliary verbs:
1. Be – eg. is, are, am, was, were, being, been, will
2. Do – eg. does, did, do, will
3. Have – eg. have, has, had, will
4. Can
5. Could
6. May
7. Must
8. Shall
9. Should
10. Would
11. Ought to
If one of these words are in the claim, use them in the question tag!
Example 1:
He didn’t submit the assignment, did he?
Here, “did” is the auxiliary verb.
Example 2:
She has worked very hard, hasn’t she?
Here, “has” is the auxiliary verb.
Example 3:
We were going to eat together, weren’t we?
Here, “were” is the auxiliary verb.
Example 4:
I am not at fault, am I?
Here, “am” is the auxiliary verb.
