SOS Children’s Villages India
It is estimated, in India, 2 crore children lack adequate parental care. While the demand still heavily outweighs the supply, several governmental and non-governmental organisations work tirelessly to provide the basic necessities to ensure these children get a fair chance at life. SOS Children’s Villages is one such organisation that sets an example of the hands-on work it undertakes to tackle this problem.
SOS Children’s Villages have been supporting orphans and vulnerable families since 1949. They work to promote the welfare of parentless children and to strengthen families and communities in order to battle abandonment and social neglect. Their flagship programs involve curative and preventative ways to tackle these issues. Since its establishment, SOS Children’s Villages has supported over 25,000 orphans, women and children in India.
Today, the SOS Children’s Villages have 32 locations across India. Each village has 12-15 homes that house 10 children and an SOS mother. With the aim of providing holistic development, these programs include health and nutrition, psychological development, and education.
SOS Children’s Villages and EnglishBolo™
SOS Children’s Villages has introduced EnglishBolo™ at many of its locations. English proficiency is recognized as an ability that opens the doors to a variety of opportunities. English assists in entry to higher education. Proficiency in English enhances job and career growth prospects. Therefore, providing English education to every child is today an essential requirement.
The current phase of the EnglishBolo™ program: was implemented in the last quarter of 2019. The program was made available to 500 children across 12 SOS CV locations across India. All education coordinators were given introductory training and intermittent refresher courses to ensure effective usage of the program. This improved learner engagement remarkably: from 41% in October 2019 to 74% by January 2020.
Results
The early results are promising! 99% of the learners that have completed the program showed significant improvement.
How the EnglishBolo™ Program Works
The EnglishBolo™ 100-day program is based on a learning model that provides structured and consistent learning and practise. This is coupled with the convenience for each user, of flexibility for accessing lessons and engaging with teachers.
The program structure:
1) An assessment test that will place the user into a program most suited to their proficiency.
2) 100 bite-size ‘learn yourself’ lessons. One lesson every day is the recommended way to use the program. Each lesson ends with a short quiz for some additional practice.
3) After 8 lessons, a user can sign up for an online teacher class. Teacher classes are an important supplement for spoken English practice. These classes help users develop confidence.
4) Each user gets to choose the day and time of the class. A user needs a good internet connection and a pair of headphones to successfully take the class. Each user gets 10 online classes for the duration of the program.
5) At the end of the program, each user takes a test that then evaluates their results against their pre-program test.
