Today we will learn about:
– Brackets
– Apostrophes
– Quotation marks
– Ellipses
Let us start! Learn English Punctuations:
Brackets
Brackets are also called parentheses.
They are used to give extra information in a sentence.
You can use them like a comma!
For example:
Deepa and Reema (who are from different schools) use the same bus.
Apostrophes
Apostrophes have 3 uses.
1. An apostrophe is used to join two words by removing a letter.
The apostrophe is put in place of the missing letter.
For example:
“This is not my phone.”
becomes
“This isn’t my phone.”
and
“I am going now.”
becomes
“I’m going now.”
2. The apostrophe is used to show possession.
For example:
If a box belongs to Ritika, you say
‘It is Ritika’s box.’
Or, if your mother has an opinion on your clothes, you say
‘It is my mother’s opinion.’
3. Apostrophes are also used for the plural form of lower case letters.
For example:
“There are many n’s in my name.”
Quotation Marks
Quotation marks are used to mark the beginning and the end of a quote.
A quote is a phrase said or written by a person that you write word for word.
For example:
My father said, “Do not go out after 9 pm at night.”
Here is another example:
“Where there is love there is life.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Ellipsis
An ellipsis is used to remove letters or words.
It is mostly used in quotes.
Ellipsis is used to remove unnecessary words from a sentence.
It is also used to remove sentences that are not needed.
This helps writers go from one phrase to another phrase.
For example:
“I can tell you the solution to this problem… try using the Pythagoras’ theorem.”
That is it!
