The fast-food industry has a strong and stable global presence. The industry generated a revenue of $570 billion in 2019. Companies like McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Subway are located in over 100 countries. A high rate of employee turnover is a concern for almost all fast-food companies. It negatively impacts employee morale and, therefore, performance. 

While many companies have attempted to tackle this problem by improving the work environment, employee experience and wages, an important area that’s not as leveraged is employee development. According to the 2019 Workplace Learning survey, LinkedIn found that 94% of employees would stay longer at companies if employers invested in their learning and development. While planning for employee development could be feared as a costly organisation-wide change, technology has made training implementation more affordable and convenient. One of the most effective methods is to give employees access to digital learning platforms. 

Pizza Hut and Employee Development 

Pizza Hut is one of the top 10 fast-food brands in the world. They have over 18,000 restaurants globally and over 500 in the Indian subcontinent.  In India, which has 22 major languages, English is an important area for employee development because it is the primary language of business. However, access to a good English education is limited to the few urban cities in the country. As a result, there are many employees in the workforce that do not qualify for the majority of opportunities available. Pizza Hut tackled this problem with EnglishBolo™.  

Pizza Hut and EnglishBolo™

In December 2019, the EnglishBolo™ program was implemented in Pizza Hut stores across Delhi NCR. The program provides comprehensive learning at the learner’s convenience.

The program is based on multi-sensory learning which builds on reading, listening and speaking in English. This has proven to be very effective. EnglishBolo™ is available as an app and on a desktop. It only takes 15 minutes of commitment each day. This makes it ideal for employees to practise during the workday or at any other time. 

Implementation

The EnglishBolo™ 100-day program provides a learning model that provides structured and consistent learning and practise with the convenience of flexibility for accessing lessons and teachers for each user. 

The program structure: 

1. An assessment test that will place the user into a program most suited to their level. 

2. 100 short ‘learn yourself’ lessons. One lesson every day is the intended way to use the program. Each lesson ends with a short quiz for some additional practice. 

3. After 8 lessons, a user can sign up for an online teacher class. Teacher classes are an important supplement for spoken English practice. These classes help users develop confidence.

4. Each user gets to choose the day and time of the class. A user needs a good internet connection and a pair of headphones to successfully take the class. Each user gets 10 online classes for the duration of the program. 

5. At the end of the program, each user takes a test and receives a certificate.
