Welcome to a new blog by the EnglishBolo™ Learning Channel – learn spoken English and more! In this blog, learn English punctuation and more!
In this series, you will learn everything you need to know about punctuation!
Punctuations are used in written English.
Do you know why they are important?
Punctuations make sure that what you write is understood by the person who reads it!
If you messaged your parents to tell them dinner was ready but wrote: “let us eat papa!” Instead of writing “let us eat, papa!”, that would be scary.
We will show you how to use the 12 main punctuations!
Let us begin with these 4.
1. Full stop (.)
You can use a full stop at the end of a sentence!
For example, “I went to school today.”
Or “I have a lot of work to finish before I can leave the house.”
2. Question Mark (?)
You can use a question mark at the end of a question.
For example, “Where are my keys?”
Or “what happened to my favourite shirt?”
You do not use a question mark when you talk about a question.
For example, “I wonder what happened to my favourite shirt.”
Here you will only use a full stop because you are saying something, and not asking!
3. Exclamation Mark (!)
Exclamation marks are used at the end of a sentence.
We use it when the sentence is meant to be read as exciting or loud.
For example, “Oh my god!”
Or “Stop eating my food, Ritvik!”
4. Comma (,)
You can use a comma to separate different parts of a sentence.
For example, “Where are my keys, ma?”
“Where are my keys,” is the question.
“Ma” is the person you are asking.
Your ma is not a part of the question, so you use a comma to separate them!
You also use commas when you list something!
For example, “I need to buy pyaaz, dhaniya patta, aloo, and mattar for dinner.”
We hope this helped!
In the next blog, we will cover more punctuations like – semicolons, colons, dashes and hyphens.
