English Can Be Confusing
English is a confusing language.
There are so many tricky words and meanings!
There are some words that have many different meanings.
These words are called Homonyms.
For example, type means to write on a computer by pressing keys.
Type can also mean a category of people
There are some words that sound the same but have different spellings.
And they have different meanings.
These words are called Homophones.
For example, flower and flour.
What are Contronyms?
There are also some words that have meanings that are the opposite of each other!
These words are called Auto-Antonyms or Contronyms.
These words can be very confusing!
Let’s look at some examples.
To Rent
This verb means to sell the use of.
For example, “I have an apartment to rent to you.”
And, it also means to buy the use of.
For example, “I need to rent a car for the trip.”
To Dust
This is also a verb!
It means to remove particles.
For example, “my mom and I dust the house before our guests arrive.”
And, it also means to add particles!
For example, “my favourite cakes have sugar dusted on top.”
Custom
Custom is a noun and an adjective!
But the noun and adjective are opposites!
The noun means usual or traditional.
For example, “wearing red and white saris for Durga puja is a custom.”
And the adjective means specially done.
For example, “I had this kurta custom-made for eid.”
