What is an Idiom? | Common Phrases in English Conversation
An idiom is a phrase that has a different meaning from its literal meaning.
‘I bet’
Meaning: To be sure of a guess
Example – I bet it will rain tomorrow.
‘The best way to’
Meaning: giving the most effective method to do something
Example – Reading aloud is the best way to practise speaking in English
‘Heart of gold’
Meaning: A very kind and good person.
Example – She runs a charity and takes care of stray animals. She has a heart of gold.
‘To cost an arm and a leg’
Meaning: Something that costs a lot of money. Expensive.
Example – This scooter cost me an arm and a leg.
‘Under the weather’
Meaning: Ill; Unwell.
Example – I will not be able to go to work today because I feel a bit under the weather.
‘A piece of cake’
Meaning: Easy, simple.
Example – That exam was a piece of cake!
‘Hit the Books’
Meaning: To study hard
Example – A very important exam is coming up so I need to hit the books.
‘Lose your touch’
Meaning: To lost an ability or skill.
Example- I used to play cricket when I was a child but I have lost my touch.
