In this video, we will learn about types of past tenses in English.
There are 4 types of past tense:
1. Simple Past
2. Past Continuous
3. Past Perfect
4. Past Perfect Continuous
Simple Past Tense
Simple past tense is used to say something that happened in the past.
The form: adding ‘-ed’ or ‘d’ to verbs. Learn about irregular verbs here.
For example:
“She worked at the factory.”
“I left my book at home.”
“He moved to Kerala.”
Past Continuous Tense
Past continuous tense is used to show an ongoing event in the past.
For example,
“She was working at the factory all day.”
The form: was/were + past participle verb.
More examples:
“I was reading a book.”
“They were trying to cook.”
Past Perfect Tense
Past perfect tense is used to tell an event was completed before another event took place.
For example,
“I had watched the show before my brother watched it.”
The form: had + past participle.
More examples:
“We had reached the house before the party started.”
“I had borrowed sugar to make halwa.”
Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Present perfect continuous tense shows that something started in the past and is still happening now.
For example,
“I had been studying when they arrived.”
The form: had been + past participle.
For example:
“It had been raining for many hours and the roads were blocked.”
